Whatever you use, you want something with fines in it, like crusher run or GAB (graded aggregate base, which is used as road base). 57, 89, etc. have no fines (are washed) and will not compact well when unconfined (like in a driveway). The Crusher run will typically be the cheapest. The fabric is a good call, and very inexpensive.
