When dealing in inches: convert inches to feet by dividing by 12. For example: pour a 25 ft. sidewalk 5 ft. wide and four inches deep. (25' x 5 ' x 0.333') / 27 = 1.54 cubic yards. Note* we achieved 0.333 ft. by taking four inches and dividing by twelve. Another example: yardage for an 80 ft. driveway, 24 ft. wide and 5 inches deep.

8 inch = 0.67 feet. 11 inch = 0.92 feet. 3 inch = 0.25 feet. 6 inch = 0.5 feet. 9 inch = 0.75 feet. This same principle applies when dealing in metric. If you enter your first two measurements, (for example, 5 metres x 3 metres) and your depth is 6 inches or 150mm, you would enter this as 5m x 4m x 0.150 = 2.3 cubic metres.

Gravel is a loose mixture of rock fragments formed as a result of erosion. Gravel, along with other types of rock fragments such as sand and crushed stone, is commonly used for construction purposes, though it has other uses as well. Rock fragments are typically classified based on the size of the individual pieces that make up the aggregate.

Mortar is used to stick things together, not stand alone. A ratio by weight of 0.5 water, 1 cement, 3 sand, and 3 gravel should make a fine concrete, although a little less water (0.4 by weight) would make stronger concrete. Water/cement ratio theory states that for a given combination of materials and as long as workable consistency is obtained, the strength of concrete at a given age depends on the w/c ratio. The lower the w/c ratio, the higher the concrete strength. All materials used for a design including the water quality should be to a high standard.
