Cut out your profile of your knife and go to grinding and catch your mistakes on the wood stick and correct it before you start grinding on a $10 chunk of steel. The paint stirrer sticks are about the same thickness as blade steel too. Just don't let anyone catch you grinding on the sticks...they will think you are crazy or something! Best of luck.

Hollow grinds can be done freehand or with a variety of jigs. The diameter of the hollow grind is determined by the size of the contact wheel. Historically, the most popular jigs are pressure jigs. They track perpendicular to the grinders belt. Pressure is created by turning a dial on the back of the jig which moves the blade forward into the belt.

So, using the hollow grind as a jig has been around for over 100 years. Notice though, the author makes two very important points. First, leave a bit of the old bevel when grinding. I recommend this based on the discoveries of Metallographers. We know now that larger grits cause deep subsurface damage that weakens the steel at the edge.

One advantage of the hollow grind is that the blade does not increase in thickness as dramatically as other grinds do. This means that as you sharpen the edge, it will remain nearly as thin as when you first got your knife. This makes sharpening hollow grinds typically easier than other grind styles.

I have been doing alot of hollow grinds on a 8 inch wheel- I do use the file guide on the blade and what I do is just hang the belt off 1/16 of an inch or so on either side-- this allows for the belt to contact the inside of the guide. That way there is no "catching" with the wheel. Reactions:izafireman izafireman Well-Known Member Nov 18, 2019 #6
