AKBoater, I've used the mini mill alone and the trick is to get the guide rail (usually on a 2x6 or so) fixed square and solid on the top of the log. Took some shims and screws and such, but it's doable. After the first cut, it's easy because you have a good flat surface after taking off the cant.

anyone had any experience with the Granberg Alaska mill G777?

I think, 24 inches would be pushing the limit of the 777 in terms of keeping the cut level. but 18-20 would be fine. for 100 bucks you can't go wrong. Quality of the bar makes a difference here aswell. Affects how much (if at all) it will sag. Familiar with this as the timberjig is also unsupported.
